This recording was made after unusual conditions in the Washington State area (Seattle) created an unexpected thunder storm. On a hot summer day in 2004 we had a cold air mass collide with our (unusual) rising hot air. This created a sudden and fierce Thunder storm in the region. It was unexpected and started with mysterious bright flashes just off the horizon for what seemed like hours before we could even hear the thunder (causing many calls to local agencies). This gave us time to find a location and set up a few microphones outside to capture the distant thunder to our digital recording equipment. The program starts with the distant storm approaching and then passing to the east. Very nice because it starts out at a medium distance then quickly builds and retreats softly ending with a long period of rain noises and very distant rumblings. Note that the thunder is somewhat subdued for most of the program to help prevent sudden thunder explosions startling anyone. It starts relatively strong but naturally fades as the program goes on. Sounds best on headphones!

We set up two microphones in a garden like location which included a variety of surfaces. Listen carefully and you might hear the rain hitting the gravel path, granite slabs, a nearby rain gutter and fence; nearby trees, rooftops, etc. Though subtle, the variety of outdoor materials adds a richness to the rain sound as the storm progresses. If you need masking noise but are afraid that pure white noise might sound too clinical and unnatural; this is a great alternative. Played at a low background volume, it can blend in with your environment and seem more natural than pure noise. Relax and close your eyes while listening; imagine a warm and almost tropical late evening with a distant thunderstorm playing an amazing light show in the distance. Try to experience the fresh and organic smell of the ozone, wet earth, and charged humid air caused by the passing storm; while enjoying the sounds of rain, thunder, and white noise together.

White Storm is lightly mixed with our digital white noise to help improve it's noise masking abilities and uses. The white noise we add to White Storm provides a pleasant masking sound; generally known for it's use in sound conditioners and sleep machines. To use: Simply play our White Storm noise MP3 at a comfortable listening level (slightly louder than external noises and distractions) to help mask unpleasant noises with a more pleasant sound. It is typically used to reduce or mask distractions from sudden or constant background noises. Many people like to sleep, nap, meditate, or study while playing White Storm in the background. Use your MP3 player's repeat function to create any duration of storm necessary.

We generate the Digital White noise used in White Storm using a software/hardware based system to directly generate a digital image. The storm was recorded outdoors using the latest high quality microphones and pre-amp hardware, recorded directly to disk (digitally), then mixed and mastered in the digital domain. This technique creates a recording that is as close to the original sound(s) as possible. We don't use delay or alter the phase to generate a stereo sound field. We utilize two tracks of random white noise for maximum quality.

Note: Due to the size of MP3 files; our Noise downloads are normally limited to a 15 minute playback duration to reduce the download time. However, we offer White Storm in a 20 minute MP3 format, with only a slight increase in file size. Use the track repeat function on your MP3 player device or software for longer playback times.
